I have highlighted several events. The Masters Class with Vic Rawlings is an example of a visiting artist working with local artists to develop a performance. It was partially funded by the LCC and MCC. A second example was the multimedia production undertaken by Spiral7 and Cilla Vee. They rehearsed in the gallery for a week prior to the performance, which included a video installation, music and movement. Claire, Cilla Vee, stayed with us and rehearsed in the gallery. Philip and the musicians, Spiral7, drove out from Boston and rehearsed several times during the week before the performance. This model for visiting artists can be developed to include, in addition to residency, workshops for the community and exhibitions for the gallery.
I think we should develop and raise grants to support visiting artists and related programming.
The red highlights indicate trouble spots. In my efforts to open up the gallery to the broader community, I placed the space at risk of damage, and equipment at risk of damage and theft. Sadly, those who have shown the least respect for the space and for our mission are those who we were initially hoping to attract. However, we are not a rock club, a dance club or a party space. Nor are we a social service agency.
So where do we draw the line? I suggest we reinforce the basic rule, “Respect the Art.” This includes the art in the space and the space itself. In addition, those using the space should understand, agree with, and support our mission. They should be active, contributing gallery members. Dan, Setheyny, RAT, and several others have set the example. Dr T produces a monthly multimedia performance. Felicia teaches in the education program. Jeff, Jeanette, April and Chana acted as events staff. Eric produced two successful fundraisers (and he’s not a member). And there are more including Y, Bobbie, Olivia and Stephanie, John Voigt, and Kitty of Chick’s Flicks.
Eric is not the only non-member listed above. We should offer these contributors a volunteer’s membership.
So here are a few suggestions –
1) Only active members (Creator and above) can book events, schedule shows or rent the space.
2) Dan and Walter approve all music/performance events [Dan handles bands, Walter new music and other media]. These events can be booked through myspace.com/119gallery Kitty and RAT help out with film and video screenings.
3) Mary Ann approves all exhibits and related events such as receptions and artists talks.
4) Walter and the Board approve all other programming.
5) Approved events are listed on the 119 Gallery Google Calendar.
6) We need volunteer staff. In exchange their help, we can offer them Volunteer Memberships. Events should NOT run without appropriate staffing.
Education Program:
The video classes and the sound art classes are meeting. I have started to get inquiries. Last month Noredin Morgan and Ian attended the DIY Video Production Class and subsequently edited a video for the Members Show. The sound production classes need instructors and promotion. Felicia has taken a break to work on her PhD program.
CTC Vista:
We have a VISTA worker to assist in developing a marketing plan. Her name is Mira Allen, she arrives in early July and starts after a brief orientation in Boston. We have a high school intern helping out in the gallery 2-3 half days a week.
