Exhibits:
“Zine Art” curated by Mary Ann was a good, muscular exhibit. It included artists from Lowell and the immediate area, and from Boston and Philadelphia. The work ranged from traditional, to copy art, to digital prints. It covered a broad spectrum from Shakespeare to collective self-published contemporary writing and poetry.
“…. But, Why?” curated by Setheyny, was another strong show that included a new group of younger artists working in a variety of media from traditional to video. The reception featured readings and performance. A couple of pieces from this show made it into the Juried Show.
“4th Annual Juried Exhibit: Anxiety Attack” completed the Fall lineup. With fewer submissions than expected, Mary Ann and Tommey still managed put together a good show. There’s some strong work from our “regulars” including Mitchel K Ahern, Deidre Christiansen, Dian Hosmer, Jim Jeffers, Hyun Ju Kim, Dan Rocha, Michal Truelsen, and Kellie Weeks; and from some “newcomers” including Chehalis Hegner and Ebenezer Archer Kling.
The sofa remains a key interior decorating element and a pain-in-the-ass to move around.
The current exhibit schedule –
Jan 13 – Feb 7Fort Point of View
Feb 17 – Mar 14The Space Between the Pit and the Peak, Incarnate Two
Mar 24 – Apr 18Hyun Ju Kim, Winner of the 4th Annual Juried Exhibit
Apr 24 – May 23Astrodime Transit Authority’s Cyberarts Exhibit
June 2 - June 27Curated Exhibit
July 7 – Aug 14th Annual Members’ Exhibit -
eliminates two guerilla exhibits and runs right through XFest, Feb 27 – Mar 1. The original schedule left the gallery clear allowing the four visual improvisers – Eric Sack, Steve Albert, Emile Tobenfeld, and Greg Kowalski – a clear space for projection. Is it possible to rework the schedule to free up the gallery for XFest?
Soundscape project – I haven’t received any response from the letter that went out a month ago. Last week Jim Veach, Chair of the Art Department at UML, scheduled a meeting but cancelled a few days later. Martha Mayo has moved back to the main library on north campus. Mira researched a number of grant possibilities.
XFest project – I haven’t heard back from Amy Sifferlen or Charlette. I have all the artists confirmed. I posted a preliminary lineup on the website at http://www.119gallery.org/?page_id=747
Programming:
I think that we may have “turned a corner.” Mary Ann wrote in our first Parker Foundation Application that it was 119 Gallery’s goal to serve the “young professionals” in the community. OUtlET was the first group of young professionals who hung out at 119. They started booking bands. Setheyny has created several events and exhibits that attracted younger artists – Frank and Eben for example. As a result we connected with a young, creative community. I think that we need to reach out to this group, offer them the opportunity to become more involved in 119. The idea of a volunteer program is good but doesn’t seem to have taken off. Perhaps, in 2009, we can work with our members to develop this program.
Fundraising:
Congratulation to the Marketing Committee, Deby and Mira! Thanks to Y, Sophy and Angie!
