The gallery was officially closed for two weeks.

On Saturday August 9, the Lien/Rocha/Tobenfeld Winners of 3rd Annual Juried Exhibit closed. It was a good show. Several works sold including ‘Back Words’

Frank Casazza, +EF+, finished painting the exterior of building and added a 119 Gallery to the panel below the window.

On Thursday August 21 Mary Ann and I took off for Livermore Falls, ME. We had sleeping bags and a tent, Mary Ann’s bicycle, food, analog synthesizers, a small PA, the Video Shredder, a few clothes and supplies. We arrived at Frantasia, a festival for OUTmusic hosted by Fran Szostek around 4pm, pitched the tent in Fran’s back yard. Audrey and her 5 year old son Ivan were already there. Greg and Andrea arrived. Katt and Hans arrived. The first evening featured great performances by Audrey Chen & Id m Theftable, Katt Hernandez, and Hooper Piccalero.

The next morning we all descended on Fran & Kathleen’s kitchen for coffee and breakfast. We went for a walk with Greg and Andrea, Andrea and I went to a dance workshop. Then we went for a sound workshop. Mark, Dei and MikeF arrived. We descended on Fran & Kathleen’s kitchen for dinner. Mike D arrived. The second evening featured great performances by Qfwfq Duo, Greg and Andrea, and Birdorgan, Marc, Dei, MikeD, MikeF et moi.

Again, the next morning we groped our way to the kitchen. We had a shower. We drank coffee. Marc & Dei showed up with blueberries and pancake batter, potatoes and veggies. They set to work making breakfast. Dei and a girl from The Cave Bears compared F-holes. A good time was had by all. We left for Bar Harbor, arriving that evening. We stayed at a motel with a bath tub.

On Sunday we hiked the Coastal Trail to Otter Point. There were no otters. Dejected we headed for Jordan Pond House where Kitty’s Mom worked in 1923 and where she got her nickname ‘Peewee.’ We picked up a few souvenirs, booked a campsite and took off to drink beer.

The next morning we lined up for a campsite but were out of luck. We were booted. The system seemed … Kafkaesque … in order to stay for multiple days you had to reserve a campsite BUT you couldn’t reserve a campsite at the campgrounds. You had to reserve it before coming BUT the 800 number didn’t really work. We never did figure out to reserve a campsite so we went touring round the island to South Harbor for more beer and lobster.

Tuesday we went biking on the Carriage Trails. I rented a bike in downtown Bar Harbor … sea level. Mary Ann took off like a bat outta’ … I struggled to keep up and up and up. It was a 500’ climb up to the trails. After that it was fun 8^) All trails lead to Jordan Pond House. We returned the bike and went out for more beer and more lobster.

Wednesday we hiked more trails, stocked up on ginger beer and took off for Lowell. None of this is any real concern to the board EXCEPT it does point out our need for a vacation …

Back to work ...

The Creative Economy: Continued from last month …

In a recent SUN article on museums, Diane Testa from the Revolving Museum revealed that 60% of their budget comes from grants, 35% from contributions, and only 5% from sales, classes and rental fees. Guess we know who’s eating up the grant money, and why they couldn’t care less about renting out the facility 8^)

One of the RM’s upcoming classes is Bob Forrant’s, ‘The Creative Economy: All you wanted to know but where afraid to ask.” I have registered for this class.

Education Program: Continued from last month

It seems that only a small number of people (artists) are interested in taking classes.

We need to do more marketing – an updated brochure and …

Finances:

Jason has taken over financial planning. Kitty has taken over the books and is going through them nit by nit 8^) This is all good.

We have a 119 Gallery Endowment of $6250 being overseen by the Greater Lowell Community Foundation. The Endowment gives us respectability. For the potential contributor it represents our commitment to stay around in Lowell. We receive a small percentage, 5%, of the total amount yearly, $312.50. It is in our best interests to build the fund.

Our first opportunity will be the Dinner & a Movie Fund Raiser scheduled for Sunday November 16. The movie will be Cocteau’s “La Belle et la Bete”  http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0038348/ accompanied by Karen Langley on cello & electronics. Before the actual dinner, there will be a special, invitation only, Champagne Brunch for potential investors … and the Board 8^)
