“Seduce Me”
Works by: Ebenezer Archer Kling Anthony Palocci Jr Christopher Eastwood Hali Vik Christine Tuccelli Timothy Goguen Curated by: Setheyny Pen Seduction comes in many forms and flavors. We've all fallen prey to its sticky grip at one time or another- whether it be for money, sex, power or something else. This month, 119 Gallery's Setheyny Pen is curating Seduce Me- an exhibit that explores the magnetic pull of all things seductive. It will showcase the works of six area artists, all current or recent art school students. "Seduction is all about leading someone somewhere," says Setheyny, "for us to be motivated we have to have passion in something. Right now I see society suffering from a lack of passion. The economy and other issues have really thrown us for a loop. I want people to come out of this show inspired and ready to do something, to participate in something."

Walter and I have met with people from the Lowell Planning Board and members and directors of art organizations such as ALL, LTC and The Revolving Museum to discuss a possibility of a Cultural Center in downtown Lowell. Our first meeting was very discouraging and a total waste of time, the other art organizations did not have a strong vision and proposal for the city and the city has no faith that non profit organizations can run and maintain a business. LTC is still on the fence because they have the most funds but is not sure if they want to save other struggling organization by participating. We the 119 have an advantage because we are in no hurry to leave our space (we actually like it here). We were interested because it would give us more exposure to a wider audience and get to work with other art organization and piggyback with them on grants and marketing. We still intend to keep our original space on Chelmsford St even if we were to participate. Out of all the art organization we have the most audience, programming and knowledge of visual arts (this is why they have asked us to join). Walter and I are interested but only if it would benefit us. The original location was going to be at the Smith Baker Center on Merrimack St, but everyone decided that it was a great performance space but not a visual arts space. The next proposal is the rug building on the corner of Merrimack and Dutton St, Revolving Museum and ALL have found an investor who is interested and buying the building and putting a Cultural Center or Visual Arts Center there. The proposal is moving pretty quickly but my fears are they are making all the decisions without the 119.
SushiSmackdown 3 was successful in being well run and fun but it was a failure in making money. We actually lost money this year because we had to buy sushi at 50% which cost us over $800 and we had about $200 worth of sushi that we didn't eat and actually threw away. The marketing was a little weak and there was too much tension leading up to the events amongst volunteer. My suggestion is this is an event we should have every year but we need to secure donations at least 6 months in advance. Many people also need to know about this event at least 6 weeks in advance. This is one of our best events and I look forward to it every year.
New Music- we are the only venue here that does any kind of new music but I am always disappointed when we sometimes only get one or two people in the audience for very talented musician. Dr T has a monthly spot and barely any audience for his performers that he brings, but last night Vanessa Lefeurve
had a pack house for her performers because she required them to market themselves and really took control that her show was going to be successful. We should require people to do a lot of their own marketing and not depend only on the 119. Even though new music does not generate a large audience I would be happy to see at least 2 people sometimes.
We got a new intern in the month of June name Laura, Mira is training her on marketing right now. I will spend this summer looking for more interns and volunteers.
This is Mira's last month here with us. She has been a huge asset and a good friend to the gallery. I will miss her here during the week but here at the 119 we have always blurred the lines between members, staff and friends. I am glad she will be in New England for another year. See you at my next party!
We still need to get the outside of our building painted!
