The Curator is responsible for
· Organizing and scheduling 8 major exhibits per year (with schedule set in September of previous year)
· Determining theme of jurored show and selecting juror, determining theme of members’ show
· Choosing the pieces of art to be displayed and deciding how they should be displayed
· Hanging the exhibition
· Producing exhibit receptions
· Arranging for the return of artwork (shipping)
· Collaborating/ co-producing additional guerilla shows
· The safety of the display pieces
· (W/ Edu Committee) Organizing educational and public outreach programs such as tours, workshops, and lectures
· (W/ Marketing Director) Publicizing exhibits by writing publicity material and explanatory catalogs
· (W/ Marketing and Development Committees) Soliciting businesses to fund special exhibitions
· (W/ Marketing and Development Committees) Writing grants for exhibition support.
· Writing reports for board of trustees.
Conditions
· May involve evening and weekend work as well as some travel
· The work can be somewhat stressful because the objects a curator cares for are extremely valuable.
· Each new exhibition is subject to scrutiny by the public, by professional critics, and by the board
· Curators get a great deal of satisfaction from working with beautiful pieces of art and from promoting the appreciation and understanding of contemporary art and artists to a diverse audience
